Tips to practice your reading skills!
- Enjoy both fiction and nonfiction books.
- Talk about what you're reading and ask questions. For fiction books, ask questions about who, what, when, where why. For nonfiction books ask about details or information from the text.
- Read books that your child is interested in. If your child is interested in a "too hard" book, read it to him/her.
- Help your child figure out unknown words. Does the picture give a clue about what the word could be? What sound does the word begin with? Can he/she sound it out? Does he/she see any parts of the word that are familiar? Does it look like another word he/she knows? What word would make sense?
- Practice trick words (sight words) often, until your child can recognize and read them readily.
- Reread the same book! Repeated readings of the same book builds confidence and fluency!
